This Edwardian side table dates from the late 19th century and brings traditional English Country House character to an interior. Constructed from walnut and mahogany timbers, the piece has a dark brown finish with a polished grain texture and subtle signs of wear on the surface. The design includes an oval top, four slender splayed legs with outward-curving feet, and a central circular lower undertier linked by curved stretchers. Mouldings edge the table top and lower shelf, while triangular corner brackets support the upper framework. Measuring 71.5 cm in height with a diameter of 53.5 cm, the table functions practically as an end table positioned beside a sofa in a living room, hallway, or study. The compact footprint makes it suitable for holding lamps, books, or decorative objects without occupying significant floor space in a domestic setting.

FAQs

Edwardian occasional tables are characterised by light, elegant proportions, sweeping curves, and functional versatility designed for social gatherings in early 20th-century interiors.

These tables were typically crafted from solid timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or beech, often featuring polished surfaces, undertiers, and mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished undersides, natural variations in timber grain, original patination, and traditional joinery techniques without modern synthetic fasteners.

Position the table beside a sofa or armchairs to hold a reading lamp, decorative ceramics, or literature, introducing structure and historical warmth to modern decor.

Dust regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
