This large photo frame originates from the 1930 Art Deco period and is constructed from chrome-plated metal and glass in a bright silver colour. The design includes stepped geometric side supports, an architectural profile, and flat rectangular feet resting on a raised rectangular base. The chrome plating remains in good order with wear visible where the glass sits against the frame, housing a decorative picture depicting a female golfer on a green field under a pale sky. The frame measures 27.5 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this piece functions as a decorative display for family photographs or artwork in a living room, hallway, or study. The clean lines and metallic finish integrate easily into modern or period interiors, providing a practical table-top accessory that holds standard-sized photographs within a distinct modernist housing.

FAQs

Art Deco picture frames from the 1920s and 1930s are characterised by geometric silhouettes, stepped borders, and polished metallic or mirrored finishes. They reflect the industrial modernist aesthetic of the period through bold, symmetrical profiles.

These frames were commonly constructed using chrome-plated metal, brass, bakelite, and polished glass panels. Chrome plating became particularly widespread during the 1930s due to its bright reflective finish and modern industrial appeal.

Authentic period frames usually feature heavy solid metal bases with stepped or ziggurat side supports, bevelled glass edges, and simple rear retaining clips. Natural surface oxidisation or minor pitting on the chrome plating over time also indicates period construction.

Position the frame on a dark wood sideboard, console, or mantelpiece to create a striking visual contrast against the reflective chrome. Combining it with clean-lined modern ceramics or monochrome prints enhances its architectural geometry.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth to prevent the accumulation of grime and surface scratches. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners, opting instead for a non-abrasive metal polish applied sparingly to maintain the reflective finish.
