Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Regency percussion pistols originates from the workshop of maker H Tatham, Charing Cross, London, dating from 1850. The weapons display dark brown walnut stocks paired with polished silver-toned steel and iron components. Distinctive visual details include octagonal barrels, engraved lockplates, engraved triggers, captive swivel ramrods, spur hammers, chequered grips, and fitted safeties. These personal purchase officer arms measure 16 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. They suit placement within a gentleman's library, resting horizontally upon a bookshelf as a display piece. The design reflects mid-nineteenth-century military and civilian sidearm standards with visible metal engraving work on the lock mechanisms. Each pistol features a sturdy grip configuration and functional mechanical assemblies suited for antique firearm display.

FAQs

Percussion pistols were developed in the early nineteenth century as a major advancement over flintlock mechanisms. They used a chemical percussion cap containing fulminate of mercury, which ignited when struck by the hammer, offering far greater reliability in wet weather conditions.

Pistols from this era typically featured stocks carved from dense hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany. Metal components, including octagonal barrels and lockplates, were forged from steel or iron, frequently decorated with hand engraving and fitted with silver or brass escutcheons.

Authentic period pistols usually display specific gunsmith markings engraved on the barrel or lockplate, alongside official proof marks stamped near the breech. Examination of construction techniques, such as hand-cut screws and period-appropriate wood patination, also aids in verification.

These items are commonly displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, shadow boxes, or on custom desktop stands in study or library environments. Placing them alongside historic books, maps, or leather-bound accessories creates a traditional focal point.

Preservation requires storing items in a climate-controlled environment with low humidity to prevent rust on iron or steel elements. Metal surfaces should be periodically treated with a light coating of microcrystalline wax or gun oil, while wooden stocks benefit from occasional wax polish application.
