Description

A fine and rare Bow porcelain figure of a charming young shepherd playing a bagpipe with his dog lying at his feet. Wearing a lilac hat, white jacket with Indian style floral decoration and pink lining, pale yellow breeches with red trim and red ribbons on his shoes. c.1754-1765. 

Provenance: Peter Bradshaw collection and illustrated in "Bow Porcelain Figures" by Bradshaw, colour plate X, reference B115, also page 177.

It measures 14cm (5 1/2") high and 8.3cm (3 1/4") wide by 7cm (2 3/4") deep.

In very good condition: a very high quality professional repair to his left wrist and restoration to the little finger and possibly the bottom of his pipe. The brim of his hat has also been professionally restored. No other damage, repair or restoration and minimal handling wear.

FAQs

Bow porcelain refers to soft-paste ceramic items manufactured at the Bow porcelain factory in East London between approximately 1747 and 1776.

Eighteenth-century porcelain figures were crafted by pressing soft-paste clay into multi-part plaster moulds, assembling the unfired sections with liquid slip, firing the body, and applying overglaze enamel decoration prior to a final firing.

Authentic Bow pieces often exhibit a warm soft-paste body with faint bone-ash inclusions, characteristic Rococo scroll or flower-encrusted bases, heavy potting, and specific incised or painted workmens marks.
