Large Grand Tour Sienna Marble Temple of Vespasian 19th C

19th century
Description

A finely carved example of a mid 19th Century Sienna marble Grand Tour architectural representation of the ruins of the Temple of Vespasian and Titus located in the Forum in Rome. Designed in the Corinthian style the temple was begun by Titus in AD79 after the death of his father, Vespasian and completed under Emperor Domitian, circa AD87.

In the 19th Century the ruins of the temple were fully excavated and models such as this one were made in marble in the Vatican workshops in Rome. Because the Siena marble quarry ran out, and so subsequent models were made in alabaster, this example is pre 1860. Carved marble with pictorial detail to the side and rarely seen under carving between the columns. Partial inscription ''ESTITVER'' to the front. Many of these models feature the partially engraved Latin letters "ESTITVER", which is a truncated reference to "RESTITUER" from the original 3rd-century restoration text by Emperors Septimius Severus and Caracalla.

Date of Manufacture

The Real Wood Furniture Company has dated this Grand Tour Marble Temple to the 19th Century.

This nineteenth-century Grand Tour architectural model depicts the ruins of the Temple of Vespasian and Titus from the Forum in Rome. Designed in the Neoclassical style, the object is constructed from ochre yellow sienna marble mounted upon a black marble base. The composition incorporates three fluted Corinthian columns with acanthus leaf capitals, supporting an inscribed entablature bearing the partial Latin inscription "ESTITVER" on the front face. Beneath the columns sits a stepped masonry plinth with detailed blockwork carving. The piece measures 95 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. Created in the Vatican workshops in Rome before 1860, this sculpture reflects the educational travel souvenirs collected by gentlemen during the Grand Tour period. The work displays pictorial detail to the side alongside rare under-carving positioned between the columns. Designed to bring classical antiquity into a domestic interior, the model suits placement on top of a sideboard in a gentleman's library or study as a decorative display object.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, wealthy European aristocrats embarked on the Grand Tour across Italy and Greece to study classical antiquity. Expert craftsmen produced scaled marble models of iconic ancient ruins, such as the Temple of Vespasian, as refined educational souvenirs and status symbols for private libraries.

Sculptors primarily utilised fine regional marbles such as yellow Sienna marble, Nero Antico (black marble), Rosso Antico (red marble), and white Carrara marble, alongside porous stones like travertine to replicate the texture of ancient Roman structures.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp hand-carved details, classical proportioning, natural patination, micro-chipping along edges, and historical iron or plaster internal fixings. Later reproductions often feature modern machine tooling and synthetic adhesives.

These models serve as architectural focal points when placed atop heavy timber sideboards, mantelpieces, or inside dark wooden bookcases, pairing effectively with leather-bound books, brass instruments, and contemporary minimalist artwork.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Avoid water and harsh chemical cleaners which can penetrate porous marble, cause staining, or strip historical wax coatings; professional conservation wax may be applied sparingly to protect the surface.
