Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These 19th-century Victorian doorstops take the form of a pair of seated hunting retriever dogs. Modelled with detailed relief textures on weighted rectangular cast iron plinths, the pieces showcase a warm polished brass finish. Each figure depicts a vigilant hound sitting upright with its head turned, displaying traditional casting seams and patination across the metallic surface. The dimensions measure 33 cm high by 22 cm wide and 5.5 cm deep. Rooted in the English country house tradition, these functional decorative items suit placement beside a front door to hold panels open against drafts. Alternative practical applications include displaying the pair on a living room mantelpiece or positioning them together as sturdy bookends on a library shelf. The solid metal construction provides the necessary weight for daily utility while adding a sporting motif to domestic interiors.

FAQs

Introduced during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, door porters were heavy functional weights designed to prop open large wooden doors in country houses and townhouses.

Victorian doorstops were primarily manufactured from cast iron, solid brass, or a combination where a hollow brass casting was weighted internally with cast iron.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically display hand-finished casting seams, natural surface patina or oxidisation in crevices, and hollow backs or iron-weighted bases rather than modern uniform brass construction.

These pieces can be positioned beside contemporary timber doors to provide textural contrast, or arranged on low hearths and open shelving as sculptural brass accents.

To preserve historical patina, gently dust the surface with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip natural oxidisation from detailed castings.
