Small Vintage Brass Three Draw Marine Telescope W. Ottway 1915 with Wooden Case

1900 - 1920
Description

Vintage Style Brass Three Draw Marine Telescope W. Ottway 1915 with Wooden Case

An attractive miniature brass three-draw marine telescope, featuring a traditional nautical design and an engraved maker-style plaque bearing the name of the renowned British optical instrument manufacturer W. Ottway & Co Ltd of Ealing, London, together with the date 1915.

The telescope is constructed in brass with a warm, aged patinated finish, complemented by contrasting dark metal fittings to the objective and eyepiece ends. Its classic extending three-draw construction features finely ribbed adjustment rings and a compact, elegant cylindrical form inspired by historic maritime optical instruments.

Of particular decorative interest is the oval brass plaque, secured by two screws and engraved:

VICTORIAN MARINE TELESCOPE

W. OTTWAY & CO LTD

EALING LONDON

1915

The inscription is accompanied by a traditional nautical anchor motif, adding to the telescope’s maritime character.

W. Ottway & Co was an established British manufacturer of optical and scientific instruments, particularly associated with telescopes and naval equipment. This example is believed to be a later vintage-style reproduction bearing the historic manufacturer’s name and date, rather than an original instrument manufactured in 1915.

The telescope is accompanied by its fitted dark wooden presentation and storage case, featuring a hinged lid, metal clasp fastening and recessed interior. The case provides an attractive way to store and display the instrument.

Measuring just 15.5cm when fully extended, this is a charming miniature example, ideal for display in a gentleman’s study, library, maritime collection or nautical-themed interior.

This vintage-style marine telescope follows a traditional maritime design in warm brass and dark brown wood. The instrument consists of three extending brass tubes with ribbed adjustment rings, an engraved oval plaque bearing the name W. Ottway & Co Ltd Ealing London 1915 alongside an anchor motif, and dark metal fittings at the eyepiece and objective ends. It rests inside a dark-stained wooden storage box featuring a hinged lid, a metal clasp closure on the front, and a matching metal latch on top. Natural variations appear in the aged brass finish, accompanied by light surface wear, minor scratches, and handling marks on the timber case. Measuring 15.5 cm high, the object sits compactly on display. Ideal for placement on an office desk or a library bookshelf, this nautical collectable adds character to a gentleman's study or interior display. The fitted wooden case provides a practical presentation method when the telescope rests inside or alongside the box. Collectors of maritime instruments and nautical-themed objects find this piece suitable for exhibition shelves, cabinets, and tabletop settings in a home today.

A multi-draw marine telescope is a portable optical instrument constructed with concentric sliding brass tubes that extend to increase focal length and collapse for compact transport.

Instruments from this period were crafted using machined brass tubing with internal glass lenses, often housed in fitted wooden transit boxes lined or structured to protect the precision optics from sea spray and impact.

Authentic period pieces feature precise threaded joints, maker engravings on the primary draw tube, natural surface patination, and optical clarity consistent with period ground lenses.

Position the extended instrument on a mahogany office desk, display it open within its wooden box on a bookshelf, or incorporate it alongside leather-bound volumes in a gentlemans library setting.

Dust gently with a microfibre cloth, avoid abrasive liquid polishes that remove historic oxidation, and clean glass lenses exclusively with dry optical wipes to preserve coatings and surface condition.
