This Regency period occasional or lamp table dates from the 19th century and takes the form of a tilt-top piece in rich brown mahogany. The serpentine top has a curl mahogany veneer with a broad crossbanded border, supported on a substantial ring-turned pedestal column above four splayed legs with brass toe caps and castors. The tabletop measures 71 cm high, 82.5 cm wide, and 57 cm deep, and tilts for storage when not in use. Position this occasional table in a living room at the end of a sofa to hold a lamp or drinks, or place it in a study or hallway as a decorative accent piece. It suits traditional English country house interiors where period furniture provides both function and character.

A serpentine tilt-top table is an occasional table featuring a curved, wave-like perimeter edge and a tabletop attached to a hinged catch mechanism on a central pedestal, allowing the top to pivot vertically when not in use.

Nineteenth-century examples commonly utilised dense woods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often featuring figured wood veneers, solid turned pillar pedestals, and cast brass toe caps or castors on the feet.

Authentic period pieces display hand-turned pedestal columns, original iron or brass catch mechanisms beneath the block, evidence of hand-cut dovetails or shrinkage on the underside, and natural wear patterns on the brass feet.

Place the table beside an armchair or sofa to serve as a functional surface for lighting and books, or tilt the top vertically against a wall to highlight the decorative wood grain as a sculptural element.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically in the direction of the grain, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and high humidity to prevent veneer lifting.
