Antique Regency Mahogany Inlaid Console Side Card Table

19th century
Description

A fine quality Antique Regency period mahogany inlaid console side card table dating to circa 1820. This elegant and versatile piece features a beautifully figured mahogany rectangular top with rounded corners, decorative boxwood style string inlay and a hinged double-action opening mechanism revealing the original green baize playing surface.

The table displays excellent craftsmanship throughout, with a finely figured mahogany frieze decorated with delicate inlay, supported on a pair of elegant shaped mahogany supports united by a central platform stretcher. Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Cast brass hairy-paw feet with wheel casters: fixes manufacture to the late Georgian era.
Concealed swivel hinge and well mechanism: Regency card table construction popular from about 1815.
Twin upright pillars on a curved plinth: Grecian revival styling of the 1820s.
Slotted brass screws in the leaf hinges: early cabinetmaker fittings before machine production.
Zebrawood crossbanded border on the top: decorative exotic veneer favoured in high Regency work.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 19th-century Regency console side card table is made from rich brown mahogany with boxwood style string inlay and sits on brass lion paw feet. The rectangular top has rounded corners and a hinged double-action opening mechanism over a frieze, a central pedestal support, and four sabre legs. Historic marks, a beautiful aged patina, and brass casters are visible on the piece. It measures 74 cm high, 84.5 cm wide, and 42.5 cm deep. Originally designed for card games, this versatile piece works equally well as a console table, side table, or occasional table in traditional and contemporary interiors. It sits beside the front door or in living spaces as a functional surface with decorative character.

Regency card tables, produced in the early 19th century, typically feature fold-over tops, central pedestal supports, intricate wood inlays, and quadruped or tripod sabre legs ending in brass castors.

These tables were primarily crafted from rich timbers such as mahogany and rosewood, often accented with boxwood inlay, brass line work, green wool baize interiors, and cast brass fittings.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joinery, original swivelling or fold-over hinge mechanisms, aged brass hardware, period-appropriate patination, and characteristic sweeping sabre legs.

When closed, the table functions as a console table against a wall in an entryway or living room, perfect for holding table lamps, modern ceramics, or framed artwork.

Regularly dust the wooden surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain annually, keeping the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
