This Japanese table screen from the Meiji period combines dark brown hardwood, mother-of-pearl, bone, brass, and gold lacquer. A circular medallion frame holds a disc with raised chrysanthemum motifs, an insect relief inlay, and a carved scroll stand. The dark timber shows rich grain and sits on shaped, stepped feet with an openwork carved frieze and vertical upright posts supporting the central panel. The entire piece measures 27 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. It functions as a decorative tabletop display suitable for placement on a sideboard top or desk within a gentleman's library or study. Crafted in 1900, this double-sided shibayama screen displays intricate craftsmanship with detailed inlay work. One side features an ivory grasshopper amongst mother-of-pearl flowers and gold lacquer, while the reverse shows a gold lacquer butterfly and mother-of-pearl flowers. A polished brass rim encircles the disc, and white bone supports flank the panel. The timber displays a warm polish and natural variations in tone, while the carved stand exhibits precise openwork scroll patterns. The structure is stable, with minor nibbles on the outer rim edge of the reverse side and undamaged panels, preserving its historical character.

Originating in late eighteenth-century Japan and widely produced during the Meiji period, Shibayama is a technique of embellishing surfaces with high-relief inlays of shell, bone, horn, and metals. Table screens incorporating this work were designed as decorative scholars desk items and export art.

Shibayama items typically feature a foundation of polished lacquer or dark hardwood, embellished with intricately carved inlays made from mother-of-pearl, ivory, bone, tortoiseshell, and brass, held within a structural wood frame.

Authentic period pieces exhibit finely carved three-dimensional relief inlay work with naturalistic detail, precise joinery, motifs such as insects and flora, and natural patination across the hardwood supporting frame.

Position the table screen on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf alongside contemporary ceramics or brass objects to create a focal point that highlights historic hand craftwork.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical solvents, liquid polishes, or water which can degrade organic shell and bone inlays. Position the piece away from direct sunlight, fireplaces, and central heating vents to prevent warping.
