FAQs

A George III wine table is a small, portable pedestal table produced in Britain between 1760 and 1820. Typically crafted from mahogany, these tables featured a circular top set upon a central pillar with tripod legs, designed originally to hold wine glasses, decanters, or candles.

18th-century wine tables were predominantly constructed from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany. Cabinetmakers utilised hand-turned central columns, dovetail joints for the leg attachments beneath the block, and turned dish or moulded edge detail on the tabletop.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-tooling, including irregular hand-cut dovetails under the central block and hand-turned column detailing. Original patination shows uneven timber darkening, natural shrinkage along the wood grain, and hand-forged metal fixings underneath.

Small tripod tables function as versatile accent pieces positioned beside armchairs, sofas, or within reading nooks. Their compact footprint and dark wood finish provide functional surface space for drinks or lamps without overwhelming modern room layouts.

Antique mahogany should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Periodic application of a high-grade beeswax polish maintains the timber moisture and protects the patination, avoiding modern chemical sprays that cause finish deterioration.
