This Victorian snuff box originates from the Georgian treen style. Formed from dark brown burr walnut timber, the object combines a natural organic form with an uneven, knobbly texture of numerous burr nodules across the lower body, a polished timber surface, and a smooth, curved upper section resembling a seal seated on a craggy rock. Visible details include small rounded protuberances, intricate wood grain patterns, and warm reddish-brown highlights emerging through the dark polished finish. The piece measures 8 cm high, 8 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, making it a compact decorative accessory for an office desk or a gentleman's library display. Placed upon a flat surface, the box serves as both a tactile curio and a functional display item within a study or traditional interior setting.

FAQs

Treen literally translates to of a tree and refers to small, handmade functional items crafted entirely from wood. Prior to the widespread adoption of metal, ceramics, and plastics, treen objects such as snuff boxes, bowls, and tools were standard household items throughout Britain and Europe.

Craftsmen selected dense hardwoods with distinctive grain figures, such as burr walnut, fruitwood, oak, and lignum vitae. Burr wood was particularly favoured because the irregular growth patterns created decorative natural textures and provided high structural durability.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of genuine age, such as smooth wear from handling, a naturally darkened patina, and fine hand-carving or hand-fitted hinges. Microscopic cracks or shrinkage along the grain lines often occur naturally as the timber ages over centuries.

Small carved treen items make excellent tactile accents when arranged on an office desk, styled within a glass cabinet of curiosities, or grouped with books on a coffee table. Their rich timber tones add warmth and character to contemporary neutral schemes.

Keep wooden treen away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent the wood from warping or splitting. Clean gently using a soft, dry cloth, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly to maintain the original lustre and protect the timber surface.
