This George IV sofa table originates from around 1800. Constructed from mahogany with a warm brown colour, it displays a flame mahogany veneer and a drop-leaf extension on a pedestal base with reeded legs. The top is crossbanded, positioned over two frieze drawers fitted with brass oval handles and keyholes. A quadruped pedestal supports the structure on brass lion paw castors. The table measures 74 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 81 cm deep, extending to 150 cm. Placed traditionally behind a sofa in a living room or reception space, the piece provides a flat surface for lamps, books, or decorative items. The drop-leaf design allows the surface area to expand when extra space is required for serving or working. The substantial wooden grain, combined with the polished brass hardware, suits traditional and formal interior schemes.

FAQs

Sofa tables produced during the reign of George IV (18201830) typically feature drop-leaf sides, shallow frieze drawers, and a central pedestal base supported by splayed legs, often decorated with reeding and brass castors.

High-grade dense mahogany, particularly flame or figured mahogany veneers, was predominantly used. Construction typically incorporated brass hardware, castors, and oak or pine secondary woods for internal drawer linings.

Authentic pieces display period-correct hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass handles, hand-turned or reeded pedestal legs, and natural patina on the mahogany finish alongside age-related wear on the brass castors.

A sofa table can be positioned directly behind a free-standing sofa, used as a slim console table in an entryway, or styled as a compact desk in a home office or living room.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or fading. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the wood finish.
