FAQs

A Regency sofa table is a narrow table designed in early 19th-century Britain, intended to be placed behind a sofa or against a wall. It typically features hinged drop leaves at each end to extend the surface area and shallow drawers within the frieze.

Furniture from the Regency period frequently utilized rich hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and zebrawood. Key structural elements often featured solid oak or pine secondary woods, highlighted with brass handles, stringing inlays, and castors.

Authentic Regency pieces usually exhibit classical proportions, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original brass hardware, and hand-finished surfaces. Look for signs of genuine age, such as natural shrinkage marks in the timber, authentic wear around the feet, and original brass castors.

A sofa table functions effectively positioned directly behind a free-standing sofa, serving as a display surface for lamps and books. It can also be placed in a hallway or entryway as a console table, or utilized as a compact desk in a home office.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and moisture sources to prevent cracking or fading.
