Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This unusual Italian Renaissance Revival pedestal stand from 1880 takes the form of a carved walnut sculpture showing two winged putti riding an ostrich. The warm brown timber exhibits fine hand-carving throughout, depicting the textured plumage of the bird, the musculature of the figures, and the surrounding naturalistic foliage, rising to a fluted column supporting a scalloped, lily pad-shaped top and resting upon an intricately carved, undulating base. Signs of age include areas in need of slight restoration to the wooden elements. The stand measures 146 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this piece functions as a decorative plant stand or sculptural display surface placed in an empty corner of a living room or hallway.

FAQs

Italian carved pedestal stands and torcheres were produced predominantly during the 18th and 19th centuries as decorative display columns or plant stands, often embellished with intricate mythological, allegorical, or figurative motifs.

These items were typically carved by hand from dense hardwoods such as walnut, lime, or beech, then finished with tinted wax or lacquer to enhance the wood grain and highlight depth in the relief work.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-chiselled carving marks, subtle asymmetry from manual craftsmanship, natural age shrinkage in the timber joints, and honest wear on load-bearing contact points.

Position the pedestal as a focal point in an entryway, corner, or window alcove to elevate a ceramic urn, bronze sculpture, or trailing botanical arrangement.

Dust regularly using a soft dry brush or cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax annually, ensuring the piece is kept clear of direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
