This early 20th-century Anglo-Japanese side table follows the export furniture styles associated with Liberty & Co. The piece comprises a square top and four curved legs in a warm brown carved hardwood, joined by an X-stretcher. The flat top surface shows an all-over low relief carving of overlapping chrysanthemum flowers and broad leaves, complete with incised petal details and textured centres. Similar carved floral panels decorate the upper sections of the cabriole legs, which taper downwards into outward-curving scrolled feet. The timber exhibits a polished finish that highlights the natural grain variations across the surfaces. This lamp table measures 45 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 37 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this item functions well positioned at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair to hold a reading lamp or decorative objects.

Anglo-Japanese carved furniture gained popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, frequently retailed by British firms such as Liberty & Co. These pieces combine traditional Japanese relief carving techniques with functional Western furniture forms.

These tables were typically crafted from dense hardwoods capable of holding intricate detail, such as keyaki wood or teak. The surfaces feature deep hand-carved botanical motifs and mortised joinery.

Authentic pieces display distinct botanical carvings, such as chrysanthemums or irises, along with characteristic cross-stretchers and slender curved legs. Some examples feature impressed inventory numbers or retailer stamps on the underside.

Position the piece alongside an armchair or within an entryway to highlight the textured wood finish. Pair it with simple modern ceramics or lighting to create a balanced contrast against the detailed carving.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft brush to clear debris from the carved crevices. Apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the wood and maintain its original patination.
