This antique Edwardian occasional side table originates from England and dates from the 1900 period. Constructed from mahogany, it displays a dark brown timber tone with visible wood grain patterns across the smooth oval top. The piece stands on four splayed, tapered square legs connected by a plain apron beneath the surface. Recently re-polished, the wooden construction maintains an excellent condition with a warm patina. Measuring 71 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 44 cm deep, the compact proportions suit placement as a lamp table in a living room, at the end of a sofa, or beside an armchair in a hallway or study. The simple silhouette integrates easily into traditional and English country house interiors.

FAQs

Edwardian mahogany side tables, produced between 1901 and 1910, reflect a shift towards lighter, more delicate furniture designs compared to the heavy ornamentation of the preceding Victorian era. They frequently draw inspiration from 18th-century Georgian and Hepplewhite styles, featuring clean silhouettes, oval tops, and slender tapered legs.

Solid mahogany and fine mahogany veneers were the predominant materials, valued for their deep grain and rich colouration. The internal framing often utilised secondary woods such as pine or oak, joined with traditional mortise and tenon cabinetmaking techniques.

Authentic Edwardian furniture often displays refined timber details combined with early machine manufacturing marks on undersides. Look for natural aged patina, original French polish finish, hand-cut joinery, and accurate proportioning consistent with turn-of-the-century cabinetmaking.

A compact mahogany table works as a versatile accent piece placed at the end of a contemporary sofa or within a reading nook. Combining dark wood antiques with modern ceramics or minimalist lamps creates a balanced contrast between period craftsmanship and modern aesthetic elements.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading of the finish. Dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the woods moisture and natural sheen.
