Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

A pair of 19th-century Victorian percussion boxlock pocket pistols comprise steel, iron, and dark brown walnut timber with steel grey metal elements. The design incorporates octagonal barrels, spring-loaded flick bayonets, engraved frames, and chequered grips. Visible details include curved iron trigger guards, hammer mechanisms positioned on the top and bottom of the frames, and fine diamond-pattern texturing on the wooden handles, alongside minor surface oxidation consistent with age and handling. Each piece measures approximately 18 cm in length. These antique firearms suit display within a gentleman's library setting, placed upon a bookshelf or within a glass-fronted cabinet as decorative collectables.

A boxlock percussion pistol is a compact firearm developed in the early 19th century, featuring an internal firing mechanism housed within a central box-like frame, operated by a percussion cap system.

These items were constructed using forged steel or iron for the mechanical frame and barrel, paired with dense wooden grips, predominantly walnut, featuring hand-carved chequering.

Authentic examples feature period proof marks stamped on the barrel or frame, era-appropriate scroll engraving on the metal boxlock, and natural surface oxidisation.

Antique firearms are typically displayed inside felt-lined glass cases, mounted on custom stands, or arranged on shelving units within study and library settings.

Metal components should be treated with microcrystalline wax to prevent rust, while wooden grips require light applications of beeswax to maintain moisture balance.
