Description

A smart and very well made antique William IV mahogany leather top desk / writing table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1830-1840 period.

This is of wonderful quality, it sits on beautifully turned solid mahogany legs terminating in brass casters. The two drawers also have beautifully turned mahogany handles and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. The inset leather top is hand coloured and tooled round the edges. This has a nicely finished back so can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some normal age related wear and patina here and there beneath the polish.

The William IV style bridges the late Regency and early Victorian eras, typically characterised by heavy, robust proportions, deep rich timber grains, and classical architectural motifs combined with robust turned supports.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid and veneered dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, often featuring hand-tooled leather writing surfaces inset with gilt tooling, alongside secondary timbers like oak or pine for drawer construction.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails on drawer linings, genuine patina on the timber and leather, original brass castors, and hand-turned wooden knobs rather than modern machine-made hardware.

An antique writing table serves as a functional anchor in a modern home office or living space, contrasting effectively against minimalist walls or paired with a sleek, contemporary chair to create a layered, eclectic workspace.

Maintain the timber by applying natural beeswax periodically to nourish the grain, and clean the leather insert gently with a dry or barely damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners and direct sunlight to prevent cracking and fading.
