FAQs

Pompeian frieze panels are inspired by ancient Roman wall paintings discovered during excavations at sites like Pompeii, notably the House of Vettii, featuring mythological scenes and rich red backgrounds.

These decorative panels typically utilise a wooden substrate prepared with gesso, painted with pigments like Pompeian red and black, and finished with applied gold leaf detailing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit age-related craquelure, natural oxidisation of the gold leaf, hand-mixed mineral pigments, and signs of historical wear on the wooden backing and borders.

This piece can be mounted on a neutral wall as a striking focal point, paired with minimalist furnishings to let the rich colours and intricate iconography stand out.

Preserve the panel by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, keeping it away from direct sunlight, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to protect the wood and gold leaf.
