This Chinoiserie occasional table is a 1930 English Country House piece made from warm brown hardwood and lacquer. The rectangular two-tier structure stands 73 cm high, 80 cm wide and 50 cm deep, supported by cabriole legs with hoof carved feet and an ornate shaped undertier. Both tiers display hand-painted oriental landscape scenes incorporating pagodas, figures and floral motifs highlighted in gold leaf, complemented by dark patterned mouldings beneath the upper surface. Suitable for placement at the end of a sofa in a living room or sitting area, the table provides a practical surface for lamps, books or decorative objects while adding distinct Asian-inspired visual interest to interior spaces. The compact dimensions allow it to fit comfortably beside standard seating arrangements without dominating the room.

Chinoiserie furniture represents a European interpretation of East Asian artistic traditions, gaining widespread popularity during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and late nineteenth centuries. Features typically include hand-painted oriental landscapes, pagodas, floral motifs, and lacquered or japanned finishes on European furniture forms.

Traditional pieces utilised fine hardwoods such as mahogany or beech coated with multiple layers of lacquer or resin-based varnishes. Surface decoration incorporated gold leaf, metallic pigments, and hand-painted tempera or oil detailing to create raised, textured imagery.

Authentic historical examples display hand-carved joinery beneath the framing, natural craquelure in the painted varnish layers, and subtle uneven wear along edges and feet. Hand-applied gilding and fine brushwork contrast noticeably with modern screen-printed reproductions.

Position the table alongside structured upholstery, such as a neutral sofa or tailored armchair, allowing the detailed artwork to stand out. Complement the painted motifs with simple ceramic lamps or minimalist glass decorative accents to avoid visual clutter.

Dust the surface regularly using a clean, soft dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or silicone polishes. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent cracking, fading, or timber warping.
