Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These Qing Dynasty temple panels are a pair of antique hand-carved and gilded rectangular wall carvings made from softwood with a giltwood finish, dating from around 1890. Each piece has a textured dark red lacquered outer frame surrounding openwork carvings in high relief, finished in gold gilding. The visible decoration includes detailed floral blooms, foliage and birds among the openwork carving. Measuring 41 cm by 22 cm, the panels serve as decorative wall hangings and suit placement in a home today above a sideboard. The surfaces show uniform gold and red coloration on the carved elements and the textured border, with structural integrity maintained across both panels.

FAQs

Antique Chinese temple panels are decorative architectural carvings traditionally integrated into temple interiors, window screens, and altars during the Qing dynasty and earlier periods.

These panels were typically carved from native softwoods, coated with gesso or red lacquer, and finished with gold leaf gilding over the relief work.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-carved joinery, multi-layered paint or lacquer remnants beneath the gilding, surface oxidisation, and wear on high-relief edges consistent with historic exposure.

Mounting these architectural panels on a plain wall or displaying them on open shelving provides visual texture, historical interest, and contrast within contemporary living spaces.

Gently clear dust from delicate openwork using a soft, dry artist brush, while keeping the panels away from direct sunlight, damp conditions, and chemical cleaning agents.
