This nineteenth-century Kashmiri square shawl, or 'amli rumal', consists of wool and pashmina worked in red and black with polychrome embroidery. The red wool ground displays dense, interlaced botehs surrounding a black star-shaped central medallion featuring embroidered cypress trees, finished with a fringed border. Measuring 183 cm high by 183 cm wide, the square textile is shown in a room with patterned rugs on the floor, framed pictures on the wall behind, and a table draped in fabric to the side. The embroidered wool incorporates shades of red, black, blue, and yellow within the border and motifs. Today, this piece works best displayed over the back of a sofa or draped as a decorative textile in a living room.

An Amli Rumal is a square shawl originating from Kashmir, characterised by fine needlework embroidery performed with wool thread over a plain woven wool ground, developed in the early nineteenth century.

These textiles are crafted using fine pashmina wool spun from the undercoat of Himalayan goats, featuring embroidered stitches such as stem stitch and satin stitch to execute intricate floral and boteh patterns.

Authentic pieces display hand-worked needle embroidery with minor irregularities, natural dye variations, fine soft goat hair fibres, and traditional regional motifs including the boteh and central star medallion.

An antique square shawl can be displayed as a wall tapestry, draped over the back of a sofa, or laid across the foot of a bed to introduce pattern and historic textile interest.

Store the textile flat or rolled with acid-free tissue paper away from direct sunlight and damp conditions, avoiding standard dry cleaning methods in favour of professional textile conservation.
