Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Sheraton revival form with splayed legs: fashionable in late Victorian and Edwardian cabinet making.
Central floral marquetry medallion: detailed pictorial inlay popular around the turn of the century.
Crossbanded border with fine boxwood stringing: decorative veneer work favoured from the 1890s.
Shrinkage along the top veneer seam: natural movement of mature timber.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century occasional table in the Sheraton style is shaped in an oval format and constructed from mahogany with satinwood and boxwood. The timbers exhibit a warm brown tone with distinct grain patterns, complemented by boxwood stringing along the apron edge and a central marquetry medallion inlay on the top surface. The construction includes an undertier shelf positioned between four slender, splayed legs that curve outward toward the floor. The piece measures 71 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. Such a versatile occasional table suits placement at the end of a sofa in a living room, a corner of a study, or beside an armchair in a drawing room. The flat top provides a stable surface for holding a reading lamp, decorative objects, or a cup of tea, while the lower shelf offers additional storage space for books or magazines. The traditional English country house design integrates smoothly into both classic and refined contemporary interior schemes.

FAQs

These tables feature refined classical proportions, delicate marquetry or stringing inlays, and multi-functional designs such as undertiers or lower shelves.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense mahogany wood paired with contrasting decorative timber inlays, such as satinwood or boxwood, set over solid wood frames.

Look for hand-cut joinery, thin timber veneers, natural wood shrinkage along the grain, and hand-cut inlay channels visible on close inspection.

Position the piece as an accent or side table alongside contemporary seating, using the lower shelf for books and topping it with table lamps or ceramics.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish occasionally, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
