This early twentieth century English hat maker trade sign dates from 1910 and belongs to the industrial folk art style. The piece consists of sheet metal, copper, and iron components finished in a dark brown tone with deep patination, showing bumps, surface damage, and remnants of an original red paint layer. Details include a top hat silhouette with a turned brim, a raised metal hatband, a thin vertical stand, and a flat rectangular mounting base. The object measures 55.9 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 27.9 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, the sign suits a gentleman's library or study interior setting today as a decorative focal point.

Trade signs served as visual representations of a business or craft, allowing passersby to identify shops and services quickly without needing to read written signage.

Trade signs were predominantly crafted from durable materials suited for outdoor exposure, including sheet iron, copper, zinc, cast metal, and carved hardwoods.

Authentic period examples display natural surface oxidisation, age-appropriate wear, hand-brazed or riveted seams, and construction techniques consistent with historical sheet-metal working.

These sculptural objects function effectively as focal points on sideboards, mantelpieces, or library shelving, providing strong graphic silhouettes within contemporary or traditional spaces.

Dust the item gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners that could strip the original oxidised surface layer.
