Dinner gongs became popular in British stately homes and country houses during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods as a formal means to announce meal times to guests residing in large estates.

Traditional dinner gongs typically feature a resonant disc made from hammered brass or bronze, suspended from a supportive frame crafted from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit period-specific manufacturing techniques such as hand-hammered markings on the metal disc, solid brass fittings, and traditional joinery on the wooden base.

An antique gong can serve as a striking sculptural accent piece when placed on a sideboard, console table, or within an entryway, contrasting well against contemporary minimalist decor.

Maintain the piece by dusting the wooden frame with a dry cloth and gently cleaning the brass with a soft, non-abrasive microfibre cloth while avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina.
