Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A door porter, or long-handled door stop, originated in the late 18th and early 19th centuries during the Georgian and Regency eras. Designed with a tall central handle, these weighted brass or iron objects allowed individuals to hold heavy timber interior doors open without stooping.

Antique door stops were typically cast from solid brass, bronze, or heavy cast iron, often filled with lead for additional ballast. The casting process created intricate decorative details, such as acanthus leaves, lion paws, or classical scrolls.

Authentic antique brass door stops generally display seam marks from multi-part casting, hand-chased surface details, and natural wear or oxidisation on the base. Later reproductions often feature smoother machine-finished undersides and uniform modern brass alloys.

A tall brass door porter serves both a functional and decorative purpose when placed beside entrance doors, hallway arches, or fireplace hearths. The warm metallic tone offers a striking contrast against contemporary painted skirting boards or polished hardwood flooring.

To preserve the natural patina, dust the brass regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, applying a light coat of microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect against tarnish.
