FAQs

Toleware refers to lacquered or enamelled metalware, primarily produced in France and Britain from the 18th through the 19th centuries, often featuring hand-painted floral motifs.

Traditional pieces are crafted from pressed or shaped sheet metal, typically tinplate or iron, finished with layers of oil-based paint, lacquer, and delicate hand-painted detailing.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as craquelure in the paint, hand-forged or soldered joints, natural wear to the metal, and characteristic muted historical pigments rather than modern synthetic gloss.

This type of piece works well mounted on plain walls as a sculptural accent, contrasting effectively against lime-washed or darkly painted plaster to highlight its organic form and texture.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid water, abrasive cleaners, or direct sunlight to protect the fragile historic painted surface from flaking or fading.
