This Victorian French Revival side table dates from 1860 and functions as an end-of-a-sofa table. It is constructed from warm brown burr walnut with walnut elements, a quarter-matched top with marquetry panels, a broad cross-banded border, a chamfered fore edge, and a shaped frieze that conceals a full-length drawer. Polished on the sides and back, the table is freestanding and rests on four cabriole legs fitted with pierced ormolu mounts at the top and finished with cast brass sabots. The visible timber features distinct natural burr grain patterns in warm brown tones, alongside ornate cast gilt-bronze mounts and slender, curving cabriole supports. Dimensions are 73 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this side table fits beside a living room sofa, in a hallway, or as an accent piece in a study, providing a surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects while adding historic character to the interior.

Victorian Louis XV revival furniture is defined by Rococo-inspired design elements, including sweeping cabriole legs, serpentine edges, decorative gilt-bronze mounts, and figured wood veneers such as burr walnut.

These pieces typically feature solid hardwood framing covered in thin sliced burr walnut veneers, accented with cast brass or gilt-bronze mounts and sabots.

Authentic period tables display hand-sawn timber marks on unexposed undersides, cast brass hardware showing natural surface oxidisation, and genuine veneer thickness that differs from modern cuts.

A Victorian side table can be positioned alongside contemporary sofas or armchairs as a lamp table, providing a warm wood contrast against neutral modern upholstery.

Burr walnut surfaces should be routinely polished with microcrystalline wax using a soft cloth, kept away from direct heat sources, and maintained in stable humidity to prevent veneer lifting.
