This early 18th-century Georgian walnut lowboy in the Queen Anne style displays a warm brown timber colour with crossbanding to the top. It has three drawers fitted with original engraved brass drop handles and an escutcheon, plus an ornate shaped apron and unusual faceted cabriole legs. Visible details include feathered grain patterns across the drawers, distinct panel mouldings on the smaller side drawers, and patinated brass hardware. Measuring 76 cm wide by 50 cm deep and 71.5 cm high, the table serves well as a compact side table beside the front door or in a hallway for surface storage. Placed in a reception room or entryway, it offers a practical surface for holding everyday items while adding traditional English country house character to the space.

A lowboy is a small table equipped with one or two tiers of drawers, originating in the late 17th to 18th centuries in Britain and North America. Designed primarily as a dressing table or side table, early Georgian examples are commonly constructed from walnut and feature cabriole legs, crossbanded drawers, and shaped lower aprons.

18th-century lowboys were typically constructed using solid walnut or oak carcasses overlaid with figured walnut veneers, such as burr or walnut crotch. Drawers feature hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary woods, crossbanded or feather-banded borders, and cast brass drop handles with backplates.

Authentic period lowboys display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including irregular dovetail spacing, hand-planed drawer linings, and original iron locks or brass fittings. Look for natural shrinkage cracks along long veneer surfaces, genuine patination around drawer pulls, and age-related oxidisation on structural oak or pine elements underneath.

An antique walnut lowboy functions effectively as a hallway console, side table, or bedroom dressing table in modern settings. Pairing the dark timber against neutral, textured walls and placing contemporary lamps, ceramics, or framed artwork on top balances historical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Preserve antique walnut by positioning it away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high-humidity areas to prevent veneer lifting or timber movement. Maintain the finish by applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year with a soft cloth, avoiding modern aerosol cleaners containing silicones or harsh chemicals.
