A monteith bowl is a type of vessel featuring a notched or scalloped rim, traditionally used in the late 17th and 18th centuries to cool wine glasses by suspending them by their bases over ice or cold water.

These bowls are typically constructed using traditional cooperage techniques, featuring vertical staves of hardwood such as oak held together by metal bands, often complemented by brass handles or mounts.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-forged or early machine-rolled brass components, natural timber shrinkage, and genuine patina consistent with age and use.

This type of vessel functions effectively as a standalone decorative object on a large table, a container for dried botanicals, or a distinctive planter in traditional and transitional spaces.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the wood without sealing it permanently.
