FAQs

Coalbrookdale was a renowned 19th-century ironworks foundry in Shropshire, England, famous for producing highly decorative cast iron pieces. Christopher Dresser, a pioneering industrial designer, collaborated with various manufacturers to create avant-garde botanical and geometric motifs that defined late-Victorian aesthetics.

These items were produced using sand-casting techniques, where molten iron was poured into moulds to create intricate openwork patterns. They were finished with hand-painted polychrome details, typically using oil-based paints to highlight floral and scroll elements.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit crisp casting details, maker marks or registration numbers on the underside or reverse, and natural oxidation appropriate for their age. Reproductions often feature softer details, modern fixings, and lack the weight and patina of genuine 19th-century ironwork.

This piece works effectively in an entrance hall or porch as a functional sculptural element, holding umbrellas, walking canes, or even dried botanicals. Its contrasting colours and industrial metal texture complement both minimalist contemporary spaces and traditional eclectic interiors.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft brush and remove any moisture promptly to prevent rust formation. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive scouring pads, which can damage the historic painted finish and protective surface patination.
