The George III period spans from 1760 to 1820, characterised by a transition from heavier, carved mahogany and oak designs influenced by Palladianism to lighter, more refined neoclassical styles popularized by designers like Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite.

Gateleg tables are traditionally constructed from hard-wearing timbers such as oak, elm, or walnut. They feature hinged flaps supported by swing-out legs, often joined by stretcher bases for stability, utilizing traditional mortise and tenon joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-planed surfaces, irregular timber grain patterns, and hand-forged iron or brass hinges. Signs of age, such as natural shrinkage cracks, uneven oxidisation, and hand-turned leg imperfections, indicate authenticity.

An antique gateleg table can be styled as a space-saving console against a wall with the leaves dropped, or opened fully to serve as a dining or writing surface, contrasting its warm wood tones with modern minimalist seating.

Antique oak should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help nourish the wood and maintain its natural lustre.
