This 19th-century Jacobean Revival writing and side table stands as a practical and handsome centrepiece for a study, library or hallway. Built from oak in warm brown tones, the rectangular top displays a green leather insert surface finished with blind and gold tooling, bordered by a gadrooned edge. Below the top runs an ogee-shaped, carved frieze containing a single drawer with a working lock. The underframe employs sugar barley twist legs linked by cross stretchers, which display carved patrae and a central turned finial at their intersection. Measuring 72.5 cm high, 94.5 cm wide and 55 cm deep, the table provides a comfortable writing surface while remaining compact enough to suit various spaces in a traditional or period home.

During the 19th century, cabinetmakers embraced historicist revivals, incorporating 17th-century Jacobean and Renaissance design elements such as heavily carved friezes, spiral-turned barley twist legs, and gold-tooled leather writing surfaces.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid oak or walnut timber, featuring hand-tooled leather inserts on the writing surface, along with mortise and tenon joinery and brass hardware.

Authentic period examples display deep hand-carved frieze decoration, clear hand-turned leg profiles, original hand-dovetailed drawer construction, and natural age-related wear across the timber and leather tooling.

Position the table in a study, library, or hallway alongside clean contemporary lighting and understated modern art to establish a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern aesthetics.

Dust the oak framework regularly with a soft cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish along the grain, while using a specialised leather conditioner on the inset surface to maintain flexibility and prevent drying.
