FAQs

Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery originating from Satsuma Province in Kyushu, traditionally characterised by an ivory-coloured earthenware body with crackled glaze, heavily decorated with enamels and gilding. Production peaked during the Meiji period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for export markets.

Traditional Satsuma pieces are crafted from clay, fired to create an earthenware body, and coated with a transparent crackle glaze. Artisans apply intricate designs using mineral-based coloured enamels and raised gold gilding, often featuring detailed figural or landscape scenes.

Authentic antique Satsuma ware typically features fine, evenly spaced crackling in the glaze, substantial hand-painted detailing with moriage (raised enamel), and often bears a makers or Shimazu clan mon (crest) mark on the base, combined with age-appropriate wear.

Antique Satsuma bowls add cultural depth and intricate pattern to modern spaces when displayed on a sideboard, coffee table, or within a glass-fronted cabinet. They work well as standalone focal points or paired with minimalist decor to balance their ornate detailing.

Antique ceramics require gentle handling and should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry cloth. They must never be immersed in water or cleaned with harsh chemicals, as moisture can infiltrate the porous earthenware body and crackled glaze, damaging the delicate gilding.
