Victorian furniture, produced during the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, encompasses a wide range of revival styles drawing inspiration from Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo periods, typically characterised by substantial construction and rich woods.

Victorian desks were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak, frequently accented with brass hardware, leather writing inserts, and hand-cut dovetail joinery in the drawers.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate construction methods including hand-cut dovetailing, minor timber shrinkage, hand-turned legs, and natural patina on the wood and brass elements rather than uniform modern machining.

Integrating a period desk into contemporary spaces involves pairing the dark wood with a streamlined, minimalist chair to create contrast, while keeping the surface styled simply with functional items like a ceramic lamp or a brass tray.

Preserve antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and maintain the surface finish by applying occasional applications of natural beeswax rather than silicone polishes.
