This Victorian pedestal desk dates from the 19th century and is made of dark brown mahogany with a green inset leather writing surface, polished brass ring handles, and a solid plinth base. The woodwork displays a rich wood grain with rounded top corners, brass keyhole escutcheons on each drawer, and visible signs of age including surface scuffs and wear along the lower edges. Measuring 73 cm in height, 122 cm in width, and 67 cm in depth with a clearance height of 58 cm under the central drawer, the desk provides a nine-drawer arrangement across the front and pedestals. It serves as a functional workspace for a study or home office.

FAQs

A pedestal desk is a large flat-topped writing table supported by two freestanding vertical pedestals containing drawers, separated by an open central kneehole.

These desks were commonly crafted from mahogany, oak, or walnut woods, often featuring an inset leather writing surface skiver and brass ring or knob handles.

Authentic pieces generally display hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, original brass keyhole escutcheons, and natural patination on the timber and plinth base.

Position the desk centrally in a home study or room corner, pairing it with modern task lighting and contemporary seating to balance traditional wood craftsmanship with functionality.

Maintain the mahogany structure by dusting regularly and applying beeswax along the grain, while cleaning the leather inset with a lightly damp cloth and specialized leather preserver.
