Description

An elegant late Georgian Pembroke table, circa 1820, in the Sheraton manner, crafted in mahogany and later enhanced with finely executed hand-painted decoration. The piece bears the stamp of Edwards & Roberts, one of London’s most eminent cabinetmakers of the Victorian period, celebrated for their high-quality reproductions and embellishments in the Adam, Sheraton and Hepplewhite styles.

The rectangular top, with hinged drop-leaves, is centred by a finely painted scene depicting two young children, framed by delicate floral sprays which extend across the surface. The decoration continues with floral motifs to the drawer front and down each tapering leg, providing a graceful contrast to the warmth of the mahogany.

The table is fitted with a single frieze drawer, mounted with brass pulls inset with floral roundels, and raised on square tapering supports terminating in brass castors. The painted embellishments, likely added in the Victorian period under the direction of Edwards & Roberts, lend the piece a distinctive decorative appeal while remaining true to the neoclassical spirit of Sheraton design.

A refined and versatile example, combining the craftsmanship of the late Georgian period with the decorative sensibility of the Victorian revival.

A Pembroke table is a type of small drop-leaf table with hinged flaps on either side, originating in the 18th century during the Georgian period. It was typically used as a breakfast table, writing desk, or occasional table, designed to be easily moved around the room.

These tables were classically constructed from fine timbers such as mahogany, satinwood, or walnut, often featuring craftsmanship like dovetail joinery, tapering legs, and intricate hand-painted floral motifs or marquetry inlay.

Authenticity is identified by examining timber ageing, hand-cut joinery, traditional finishing methods, the quality of the hand-painted details, and maker marks or stamps if attributed to renowned cabinetmakers like Edwards & Roberts.

This piece can be styled as a functional side table or accent piece in a living room, allowing the drop-leaves to remain down for a compact footprint or raised to display decorative objects or table lamps.

Preserve the piece by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking and paint fading. Clean only with a soft, dry cloth and apply occasional coats of appropriate beeswax to nourish the wood.
