Antique Georgian Mahogany Lamp / Work Table with Removable Sewing Basket

19th century
Description

A very elegant antique English Georgian mahogany lamp or work table dating to around 1800 during the reign of George III.

The table features an attractive cut corner top above two drawers and stands on slender turned legs united by an X framed stretcher. The design displays the refined proportions and restrained elegance associated with late Georgian furniture.

The hinged top opens to reveal a removable work tray and beneath the table sits the original fabric work basket which can easily be removed if preferred.

Originally these tables were made as sewing or work tables and were used for needlework and embroidery, with the basket designed to hold wool, fabric or sewing projects while the tray organised sewing tools and materials.

Today they are more commonly used as lamp tables or occasional tables beside a sofa or chair, making them both practical and decorative pieces of early English furniture.

The table displays a lovely rich mahogany colour and elegant proportions typical of the George III period.

Condition Report

Good antique condition with age related wear consistent with use. Minor marks to the top as expected with age. Structurally sound and sturdy. The fabric work basket remains present and can be removed if desired.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Georgian work tables were compact occasional tables designed for specialized household activities such as needlework, writing, or reading.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from high-grade hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or satinwood, incorporating hand-dovetailed drawer linings and solid brass hardware.

Authentic Georgian tables demonstrate period construction markers including hand-cut dovetail joints, natural timber shrinkage across solid surfaces, original brass keyhole escutcheons, and hand-turned leg profiles.

Work tables function as versatile accent pieces, serving effectively as sofa end tables, bedside nightstands, or compact hallway consoles when paired with contemporary lighting and textiles.

To preserve the original finish, position the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying natural beeswax polish annually.
