This Italian Neoclassical occasional table dates from 1910 and takes the form of a circular lamp table measuring 64 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 62 cm deep. The construction combines a polished pink marble top with a cream-painted and parcel gilt wooden frame. Gilded drapery swags decorate the frieze beneath the top, supported by caryatid term legs that terminate in monopodial paw feet above flower bulb terminals. A circular stretcher links the lower section of the legs, establishing a balanced foundation. Placed at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair, this piece serves as a surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects. The painted cream finish combines with gold leaf highlights to create a bright focal point in a drawing room or study. The sturdy stance and compact footprint allow the table to sit comfortably in both generous reception spaces and more intimate sitting rooms.

Neoclassical furniture originated in the mid-18th century as a revival of ancient Greek and Roman design principles. It features symmetrical proportions, straight lines, and motifs drawn from classical antiquity such as caryatids, drapery swags, columns, and carved animal feet.

Italian Neoclassical tables frequently combine carved timber or composition frameworks with painted and parcel gilt finishes. Tops were often crafted from figured marble, polished alabaster, or inlaid pietre dure panels to add texture and durability.

Authentic parcel gilding involves applying gold leaf selectively to raised carved details over a clay bole base, leaving other sections painted or unvarnished. Wear typically reveals the red or yellow bole undercoat beneath the gilded highlights rather than uniform modern spray paint.

Position the table beside a tailored sofa or armchair to act as a functional lamp or drink stand. Contrast the ornate classical details against minimalist wall finishes, contemporary textiles, or clean architectural lines.

Clean painted and gilded wood using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or light feather duster to prevent surface scratching. Avoid chemical sprays, water, and direct sunlight, as moisture and UV exposure can lift fragile gold leaf and crack aged paint finishes.
