FAQs

A monstrance, also known as an ostensorium, is the sacred vessel used in the Roman Catholic, Old Catholic, and Anglican traditions to display the consecrated Eucharistic host during liturgical ceremonies such as benediction or adoration.

Traditional monstrances were predominantly crafted from metals such as brass, bronze, or silver, frequently finished with a layer of gold gilt. Construction techniques typically involved precision casting, intricate hand-chasing, repousse work, and glass or crystal bezel setting for the central lunette.

Authentic 19th-century pieces generally exhibit traditional casting flaws, hand-tooled chased details rather than modern machine stamping, natural patination consistent with age, and construction methods characteristic of Victorian Gothic Revival workshops.

Such architectural and sculptural metalwork can be displayed as a striking focal point on a mantelpiece, within a glass cabinet, or upon a console table, contrasting sharply with clean lines to create a sophisticated cabinet of curiosities aesthetic.

Gilt brass should be cleaned strictly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth to remove dust. Harsh chemical polishes, abrasives, or liquid cleaners must be avoided entirely, as they can permanently strip the delicate gold gilt finish.
