It was listed by Touch of Time Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A rare and exceptional Spode Felspar porcelain dessert service for twelve, c.1820, comprising twelve plates, four shaped serving dishes, and a dramatic elevated centrepiece.

The items are made of “Felspar” porcelain, a technological novelty introduced by Spode in early 1820s. Felspar porcelain had a high content of feldspar, which gave the porcelain not only brilliant white translucency, but also made it more durable and therefore very popular for dessert and dinner wares.

Each piece is finely hand-painted with richly detailed botanical subjects, encircled by ornate gilt floral borders accented in red, and finished with a gadrooned rim - one of the Spode’s prettiest patterns - no. 4033.

It is a superb example of Regency period tableware, both decorative and highly collectable.

Marked: Each piece bears the pattern number and either the Spode stamp or handwritten mark.

Provenance: Gwysaney Hall, Flintshire, Wales

Dimensions:

Centrepiece: H 12 cm × W 34 cm × D 23 cm

Serving dishes: 30 × 17 × 4 cm

Plates: 25 cm diameter

Condition: excellent original condition with no damage, restoration or crazing, and only the light surface wear.

Date of Manufacture

Touch of Time Antiques has dated this Antique Spode Dessert Service to the 1800s.

Felspar porcelain is an innovative ceramic body introduced by Spode in the early 19th century, incorporating feldspar into the paste to create a whiter, more translucent, and durable ware.

These services were crafted from fine porcelain or felspar china, shaped using traditional moulds or throwing techniques, and embellished with hand-painted botanical motifs and gilded borders.

Authentic pieces often feature period backstamps, such as the Spode felspar mark, combined with characteristic hand-painted botanical studies and high-quality gilding typical of the Regency era.

Antique porcelain can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, used to dress a traditional dining table, or mounted as decorative wall plates to add classic colour and historic charm to a room.

Antique porcelain should always be washed by hand using mild detergent in lukewarm water, avoiding harsh scrubbing, abrasive sponges, or dishwashers to protect the delicate hand-painted details and gilding.
