Description

This charming little 'chanteh' or vanity-bag, contains three light-coloured birds marching across the desert with two dark-coloured birds below. Symbolically, the light-coloured birds represent the males (sky) and the dark birds, the females (earth), thus the creation of life!

The bag was woven by a Darrehshuri nomad within the Qashqa'i Confederacy circa 1900 and was a highly-prized possession for the weaver who would have kept a mirror, coins or jewellery in this bag.

It is in excellent condition with the original braided handle for transporting it over the woman's shoulder.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Qashqai bags were woven by nomadic confederacies in south-west Persia, primarily used for practical storage during seasonal migrations and as decorative household items.

These pieces are typically handwoven from handspun wool, often utilising warp-faced or slit-weave tapestry techniques dyed with natural organic materials.

Authenticity is determined by examining the natural dye variations, wool quality, knotting density, structural wear patterns, and traditional tribal motifs characteristic of specific sub-tribes.

Such pieces can be displayed mounted on a wall as textile art or integrated into curated shelf displays to add texture and historical depth to a room.

Preservation requires keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, avoiding excessive moisture, and gently vacuuming with a protective mesh screen to remove dust.
