Tunbridge Ware is a type of decorative woodworking, specifically in mosaic or marquetry, that originated in the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent, England, gaining significant popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras.

Pieces are crafted using a vast array of naturally coloured British and exotic woods, such as holly, beech, and sycamore, assembled into tiny mosaic blocks to form intricate pictorial or geometric designs.

Authentic pieces often feature microscopic mosaic tesserae made from multiple wood species, sometimes accompanied by characteristic printed paper labels reading A Tunbridge Wells Gift, alongside period-appropriate turning marks and patination.

These small decorative objects integrate seamlessly as curated tabletop accents on bookshelves, desks, or mantelpieces, adding historical texture and rich materiality to contemporary spaces.

Maintain wooden pieces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying occasional light coats of microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber without damaging the historic finish.
