FAQs

The French Empire style, emerging in the early 19th century under Napoleon Bonaparte, was heavily influenced by the classical antiquity of Greece and Rome, characterised by symmetry, military motifs, and rich materials like gilt bronze and marble.

Empire period objects typically utilised fire-gilded bronze, known as ormolu, combined with contrasting natural elements such as fine-grained marbles, patinated bronzes, and exotic hardwoods.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-chased detailing after casting, a deep mercurial or galvanic gilding layer with soft lustre rather than bright modern plating, and period-appropriate construction methods on the undersides.

These items serve as sculptural focal points on mantelpieces, desks, or bookshelves, contrasting sharply against clean contemporary lines or adding gravitas to traditional shelving arrangements.

Maintenance requires only gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth; chemical cleaners, abrasive polishes, and moisture must be strictly avoided to preserve the delicate historical surface layer.
