Description

A very beautiful and vibrant Chinese jardiniere with allover enamelling portraying figures in exotic scenery with birds and foliage. The side panels are set with foliage , butterflies and birds.

There are no chips or cracks. There are two small sections on one side panel where there is a loss of enamel. However, it is not chipped off but looks as though the enamel was not present before firing the piece.

It doesn't detract from the piece at all. See photos.

We estimate the piece to be from 1880-1910.

We can deliver free of charge in UK mainland.

Payment by bank transfer, PayPal or card via telephone

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Chinese porcelain jardinieres have been crafted for centuries, traditionally used in courtyards and scholars studios to house prized plants such as orchids and miniature trees, reflecting a deep cultural appreciation for nature and refined aesthetics.

These vessels are typically formed from high-fired kaolin clay, coated in glazes, and hand-decorated using enamels such as the polychrome palette, before undergoing a secondary firing process to fix the intricate pigments.

Authentication involves examining the characteristics of the glaze, the presence of stacking rings, iron-spotting in the clay body, and the brushwork finesse of the underglaze or overglaze painting, often corroborated by reign marks.

They serve as striking focal points when contrasted against minimalist surfaces, functioning either as a houseplant container or simply as a sculptural art object on a sideboard or table.

Maintenance requires gentle cleaning with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap, avoiding abrasive materials. When using them for live plants, placing a protective saucer inside prevents moisture damage to the antique ceramic body.
