FAQs

Cast iron door stops gained popularity in the 19th century as coal fires and heavy draughts made effective door retention essential in British homes, leading foundries to produce weighted items in diverse sculptural designs.

These pieces were produced using traditional sand-casting methods, where molten iron was poured into sand molds, resulting in heavy, durable items often finished with a protective japanned or painted coating.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp mold seams, heavy weight, age-related oxidation beneath the surface coatings, and occasionally maker marks or registry numbers cast into the reverse.

This functional object can be utilised practically to hold open interior doors in hallways or studies, or repurposed as a sculptural paperweight on a desk or mantelpiece.

Preserve the metal by keeping it in dry conditions, dusting with a soft cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to protect the original finish from rust and moisture.
