Description

Large English 18th Century Antique Stone Lion Sphinx

This is a fabulous, large Georgian English hand carved stone lion sphinx statue that is mounted on a rectangular plinth. Very well carved, the body of the lion is very rotund and strong looking with a carved flowing mane. Very much modelled on an earlier pre-aksumite sphinx found in Eritea, Africa that has a simpler lion’s face. In excellent condition, with no damage to the lion, one corner of the plinth has been off, but is all there. Carved into the front is 1709. A wonderful 18th century antique architectural stone lion.

Sphinx sculptures gained prominence in English landscape design during the 17th and 18th centuries, heavily influenced by classical and neo-classical revivals inspired by Greek and Roman antiquity.

Traditional pieces were typically carved from natural limestones such as Portland or Bath stone, or cast in early forms of coade stone and mortar compositions designed to withstand weathering.

Authenticity is determined by evaluating tool marks, natural weathering patterns, lichen accumulation, material composition, and consistency with period-appropriate sculptural styles.

An antique stone sphinx can be positioned as a focal point on a terrace, flanking an entrance, or integrated into a minimalist modern interior to provide a striking contrast of textures and historical depth.

Preservation involves gentle cleaning using low-pressure water and soft brushes to remove harmful organic growth while retaining the natural patina, avoiding harsh chemicals that can degrade historic stone.
