This nineteenth-century English Country House doorstop takes the form of a sculpted fox head. Made from cast iron with a textured finish, the heavy object is black in colour and stands on a flat, weighted base. The photograph reveals pointed ears, a raised snout, a rough surface texture, and minor wear. It measures 15 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. Suitable for daily use in a home today, this piece functions beside the front door to keep heavy doors propped open securely. The Highland Hunting Lodge design suits hallways, studies, or boot rooms, bringing traditional character and functional utility to interior spaces.

FAQs

Cast iron door porters, or doorstops, became popular in the early nineteenth century across Britain to hold open heavy timber doors, frequently manufactured with sporting, heraldic, or animal themes.

These items were manufactured by pouring molten iron into sand moulds, resulting in heavy, solid objects with pronounced surface textures and distinct casting seam lines.

Authentic period pieces exhibit smooth wear on the contact surfaces of the base, natural oxidisation, precise detail in the casting, and slotted fasteners rather than modern Phillips screws.

Position the doorstop beside entryways, display it inside a fireplace hearth, or use it as a decorative paperweight on a desk or low shelving unit.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry brush and avoid washing with water to prevent rust; apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax to protect the iron from humidity.
