Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A refectory table is a large, long table originally used in medieval monasteries for communal dining in the refectory. Over subsequent centuries, the form evolved into domestic use, becoming a central fixture in large country houses and estates.

These tables are traditionally constructed from heavy domestic timber, primarily oak, joined using traditional mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. They typically feature sturdy stretcher bases designed to provide stability on uneven stone floors.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, hand-carved details, timber shrinkage, and natural oxidisation consistent with age. Joint construction should display traditional hand-cut joinery rather than modern mechanical fasteners.

Pairing the heavy wooden table with contemporary minimalist seating or industrial lighting creates a balanced contrast. The substantial scale makes it an effective focal point in open-plan spaces or traditional dining rooms.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and avoiding direct sunlight or heat sources that can dry the timber. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help nourish and protect the finish.
